I arrived at Atlantic Hideaway in Delray Beach, Florida after office hours with specific details on how to access my guest room. Even though the office was closed, the directions texted to my phone were easy to follow and accurate. After pulling into the parking lot at the back, I headed down the walkway, typed in the code on my room’s keypad door lock and discovered another Florida hotel charmer. My room, tucked at the corner of the back of the one-story building was cozy and welcoming.
I am fond of small family-owned hotels. Generally, I find a homey, uniqueness that captures the local vibe. I also like promoting places that are competing with larger, splashy establishments. The Atlantic Hideaway matched what I hoped to find in an affordable destination. This 13-guest room bungalow style hotel with its pastel color palate is a throwback slice of nostalgia. Think road trips at a leisurely pace and sitting in a patio chair drinking coffee as a morning pleasure. Small courtyard like spaces edged by tidy hedges, leafy palm trees and flowering bushes offer respite from the bustle found along Delray Beach’s close-by art district and nightlife scene.
My room with its single full bed was tasteful, clean and comfortable. Although on the small side, there was ample room for another person. With just me, I had space to spread out. My suitcase went on the luggage rack near the foot of the bed, and if I had more belongings, the closet was large enough to hold plenty. The white wooden window shutters, the bed’s white headboard and the two small white bedside tables added to the room’s airy, cottage-like feel vibe. The bed’s aquamarine accent pillow matched the color of the Keurig coffeemaker, and the artwork, a pink flamingo print and painting of row boats evoked a Florida beach theme.
The small desk and chair, small refrigerator, flat screen TV and Wi-Fi created a workspace and entertainment combo. I did need help with the TV. When it wouldn’t switch channels, I called the number for after-hours help. The maintenance person who lives close by came right over. After switching out the remote batteries, he solved the problem, and gave me a TV tutorial before he left. I was impressed how quickly friendly help arrived. Because the TV is mounted on the wall above the desk, I pulled the chair over to the bed for more comfortable viewing. Updated in 2016, the bathroom had a contemporary feel.
In the morning, after my Keurig coffee, I walked the short distance through the old Florida style neighborhood to Pineapple Grove, Delray Beach’s art district. Galleries, boutique shops, restaurants and public art are a sensory feast here. Delray Public Beach is also within walking distance. With Atlantic Hideaway’s free parking, it’s easy to leave one’s car and explore on foot whether one wants a leisurely day at the ocean or boutique shopping in town. Bicycle rentals are also close by if that’s your pleasure.
In addition to my room, other rooms range from two full size beds to a two-room queen bed suite. If you want room for a rollaway bed or a crib, book a plus room. Rates range from $170 to $315 depending upon the day of the week and room. There are AAA, Florida resident, returning guest and military discounts. I booked my room through Hotels.com.
Delray Beach is about 20 minutes from the West Palm Beach Airport and 45 minutes from Fort Lauderdale. Although I only had one night, I wish I had time for more. There is a discount for extended stays. The Atlantic Hideaway is also pet-friendly.
