I’ve ranted plenty about the media coverage of Mexico. As someone who has lived here since June of 2010 and has had a steady stream of family and friends coming to visit, I can say for sure that the impressions of how dangerous it is here are far overblown.
So in my continuing series of defying Fox News and going to places that are on the no-go list, this past weekend I took my family to the state of Michoacan. In all fairness, I delayed this trip a bit after some narcos and some policemen got into a fight in Morelia back in December, but then again this happens in major U.S. cities pretty much every week. (People in foreign countries who watch Hollywood movies think it happens every day, everywhere, in Amerika.)
The difference is, people shrug their shoulders in the U.S. and go back to watching TV in their suburban gated community, safe in the knowledge that it’s not in their neighborhood. They understand that local map. They just don’t know how to read maps from anywhere else. It’s all just one big scary world full of foreigners.
We also hired a car and driver one day and went exploring around Lake Patzcuaro, visiting craft villages and workshops. If you want to buy crafts in Mexico, this is a prime spot. If I owned a house in Mexico that was anywhere close to here, I’d stock the entire thing with custom furniture, intricate masks, and beautiful pottery from this region.
I’m not a guy who gets too excited about going shopping, but I could drop a few grand here on a daily basis without thinking about it if I had a place to furnish. Amazing stuff.
