We recently embraced the flat-screen television trend and bid farewell to our bulky entertainment center. Even though the TV is mounted on the wall, I felt that we still needed a sort of table underneath it. After exploring various options, we discovered that most TV stands available were either overpriced or poorly made. That’s when we decided to get creative and brainstorm ways to repurpose items.

After some searching, we found a dresser on Craigslist. I did forget to take a photo before we removed the center doors and drawers, but it was a typical dresser.

My husband had some leftover wooden scraps in the garage, which he transformed into shelves to replace where the drawers used to be. You can still see where the hinges from the doors were removed along the sides.

The previous owners had already started stripping the dresser in hopes of refinishing it.

As you can see, the top of the dresser was quite damaged, which led us to rethink our original plans. Staining it wouldn’t hide the black marks, so we researched various painting techniques instead.

My husband took out the drawers and sanded down the stained areas. Then it was time to paint! We chose a high-quality flat black paint and applied it thoroughly to the dresser, allowing it to dry completely. After drying, he put the drawers back in and gently sanded the corners and edges to give it a distressed look. A quick trip to Hobby Lobby yielded perfect drawer pulls to complete the transformation.

Dresser – $30
Paint – $15
Drawer pulls – $25
Total cost = $70

We’re really pleased with how it turned out! We store video games and accessories in the top drawers, and the four side drawers are just the right depth for DVDs, making the titles easy to see. For just $70 and a bit of effort, we now have a stylish piece that could be passed down.
