If you want a window seat to the Columbia River, the Cannery Pier Hotel & Spa is the place to be. Situated on the mighty Columbia River on the Oregon coast, this boutique hotel has recently undergone a multi-million dollar renovation.
This was my second visit to the charming waterfront town of Astoria, Oregon. The 46-room hotel is set on piers and was once home to a fish packing operation. You’ll be charmed by the bright colors on the exterior of the hotel and the nautical nod to the town’s Scandinavian heritage.
My husband and I were enjoying a coastal road trip from Yachats to Astoria and thoroughly enjoyed our two-night stay in this town on the National Register Historic District. I’ve had the pleasure of staying at many luxury hotels, and I have to say that I’d happily return to this hotel any time of year. We visited in late May and the weather cooperated.
We enjoyed the complimentary bicycles for riding on the riverfront path and we took advantage of the hotel’s chauffeur-driven Silver Cloud Rolls Royce when we dined downtown. Even if the weather is bad, this hotel would be an excellent location for storm watching.
Every room in this boutique hotel offers a view of the Columbia River. Our king deluxe room included a balcony, offering stellar views of the river and Astoria-Megler Bridge. If the weather takes a turn, hunker down in the window bench, snag the binoculars that are conveniently located in the room and watch for barges or seabirds.
Under the warmth of the cozy Pendleton blanket, or from under a layer of bubbles in the clawfoot bath tub, you’ll enjoy your time in the hotel room. Amenities include Steeped Coffee single serve bags of organic French roast and custom blends of Pat’s Pantry tea, along with a fancy EKG kettle to brew hot water. Enjoy a beverage while sitting by the gas fireplace in your white cotton robe and matching slippers.
All year long guests may take advantage of the Aveda Spa and Finnish sauna. You’ll want to make advance reservations for spa treatments but the mineral hot tub and sauna are available to all hotel guests during certain hours.
Astoria Oregon Hotel Dining Options
Dining and drinking options are plentiful at this intimate hotel. UPDATE: See below for Bar 600 overview. I’m told a small restaurant and bar are in the works. Until then, enjoy an evening social hour with local wine, non-alcoholic offerings and Josephson’s lox, a local specialty.
Since my last visit to Astoria, Bar 600 has opened at Cannery Pier Hotel & Spa. The hotel’s cocktail lounge takes its name from the wooden piers extending 600 feet into the icy Columbia River waters on the Oregon coast. In addition to craft cocktails, local wines and spirits, the hotel’s kitchen turns out tasty flatbreads, charcuterie boards, oyster shooters and a Tawny Port and Truffle Trio. It was Dungeness crab season on our visit, so check the menu for what’s in season locally. Bar 600 is a great place to belly up to the bar, warm yourself by the fire and watch the sunset. The Astoria waterfront views will not disappoint.
The smell of fresh-from-the-oven cookies fills the downstairs lobby in the evening. Take your warm cookies and meander upstairs to the Hall of History. Here you’ll find black and white photos from the Astoria, Oregon fishing docks. Read of the historic 1922 fire that burned much of the waterfront.
If you are traveling with pets, Cannery Pier Hotel & Spa is pet-friendly. They do charge an additional nightly fee, but it includes amenities such as a Pendleton dog bed, water and food bowls, as well as a Cannery Pier bandana for your pooch.
