Christmas movies like Lindsey Lohan’s, “Falling For Christmas” remind me of lodging with holiday cheer. Here are some gems steeped holiday spirit that we’ve enjoyed. Whether you head to one for an overnight, a drink at the bar, delicious food, or just to enjoy a gorgeous lobby decked out in finery, here are suggestions.
Christmas is the name of every season at Inn at Christmas Place in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. From the lobby to the guest rooms, to every possible space, Christmas is to celebrate year round. From soap dishes to bath-towels to throw pillows, figurines, and ornaments–if you can think of it, you are bound to find it. This time of year, Christmas memories crank up with special activities at this Bavarian style inn including an enormous cuckoo clock fireplace that chimes in celebration. Specific Christmas season activities go to January 6, 2023. You can book directly at the hotel or through Booking.com.
In the heart of Ohio’s Amish country, Donna’s Premier Lodging in Berlin offers individual cabins and suites. I had the good fortune to stay in a cabin decked out for the holidays. Because I arrived after dark, the lit Christmas tree was a perfect good cheer welcome. I popped in a Christmas CD, turned on the gas fireplace and settled into cozy comfort. It’s downtown Berlin vacation makes for a perfect place for last minute shopping at specialty stores. One detail to remember, if you want to enjoy a glass of wine, bring your own. I drove to the next county over in Millersburg to buy some at a gas station/convenience store. You can book online.
Head to upstate New York just outside of New Paltz in the Hudson Valley to Mohonk Mountain House. Mohonk, opened in 1869, combines Victorian charm and sensibilities with a modern elegance. During the holidays, wreaths, garlands and Christmas trees combine nostalgia and wonder into a lovely mix served up with fresh baked cookies. Here’s where settling into a comfy chair to enjoy the company of others while overlooking the lake is a must.
Like Mohonk, The Red Lion Inn in Massachusetts has a days of yesteryear feel where Christmas lights cast a warm glow when night comes. Greenery that festoons windows and the expansive porch seem straight out of Dickens. The Red Lion Inn, dating back to 1773 is rich in history. Take time to browse the halls and common areas for the bounty of artifacts and artwork. I so enjoyed myself visiting other travelers visiting for the holidays when I grabbed a bite at the bar. You can make your reservations for this inn on Booking.com.
For a big city glam and charm combination, head to Palmer House in Chicago. I had the fortune visit during a Christmas holiday. Along with a fabulous tree, this Hilton hotel’s lobby includes ceiling murals painted by Louis Pierre Rigal. Rigal is known for his Art Deco style. Also impressive are the Tiffany and Co. 24-karat gold winged candelabras. For more than 150 years, Palmer House has been wowing guests with luxury and comfort. Make reservations directly with the Palmer House or try Hotels.com for a better rate.
