When searching out a road trip stay, I look for places close to whatever interstate is taking us from here to there and near don’t miss attractions. I found that perfect road trip stay at My Place in Jamestown, North Dakota. This smaller hotel chain has a few locations in 26 states from Alaska to Georgia. There’s one in Marion, Ohio. If they are all like the one in Jamestown, I highly recommend checking out this chain. Jamestown is also an interesting destination.
We arrived after driving from Billings, Montana with a stop through Teddy Roosevelt National Park fairly late at night. The young woman at the reception desk was friendly and efficient. I eyed the kiosk style store with microwaveable food before heading to our room. Unfortunately, someone had smoked in our one queen bed room. With a heartfelt apology from the receptionist, we were quickly switched to a double queen room at the same rate. The other single queen rooms were booked.
Amenities at My Place
Because My Place is designed for travelers staying for an overnight or much longer, each room has a small kitchenette area. The refrigerator is an apartment size which allows for one to stock up for a few days instead of jockeying space to fit beverages and whatever else is in your cooler in the typical hotel room mini fridges. There’s a two-burner countertop stove, a decent size microwave, coffeemaker with coffee, toaster, and cabinets stocked with plates, cups, and silverware.
One amenity that caught my eye was the bottle opener attached to a cabinet. Handy! Usually, one has to rummage in a drawer for such an item. A guest note on the room’s table gave a nod to the bottle opener as well. The My Thoughts notepad creating a dialogue between guests and staff is a lovely touch and attest to long road trip travel. I wonder where this awesome guest was heading? This short missive reminds me of the line “miles to go before I sleep” in Robert Frost’s poem, “Stopping by the Woods on a Snowy Evening.”

The small two-person kitchen style table with chairs gives a homey feel. The room’s flat screen TV, bedside lamps and photographs of local scenery like American bison and sweeping views also add to a homey, non-fussy aesthetic. Comfortable quality bedding and pillows gave us a restful night sleep. Like the rest of the room, the bathroom was modern and clean. A hairdryer, iron and ironing board rounded out what anyone would need.
After we were settled into our second room, I headed to the kiosk to look for dinner. The microwavable beef and broccoli was fine to tide me over until morning. Unlike many hotel kiosks that seem to hike up prices, My Place’s price points are reasonable.
Complimentary coffee is in the lobby dining room 24/7. A basic breakfast is served in the room for a small fee if you order ahead, or you can check out the offerings in the kiosk.
Reasons to Stop in Jamestown, North Dakota for a My Place Stay
In addition to My Place, Jamestown, North Dakota is a fine road trip stop for the slice of American bison history. This includes the World’s Largest Buffalo and the National Buffalo Museum. The museum is well done, informative and reasonably priced. The children’s section is great for adults as well. Outside of the museum, buffalo do roam.
Near the World’s Largest Buffalo, created in 1959, The Frontier Village is a collection of original buildings from North Dakota’s frontier past. Antiques, artifacts and informative signage gives a robust overview of North Dakota’s history. One of the buildings is the writer’s shack of Louis L’Amour. I could have spent more time in Jamestown, but we were on a road trip with other stops before home.
