Creative Ways to Save for College

Special thanks to COUNTRY Financial for sponsoring this discussion. All views expressed are my own.

When considering how to save for college, most people probably envision some common strategies:

  • Automatic savings transfers from your paycheck
  • Dedicated college funds
  • Holding garage sales
  • Organizing bake sales

However, here are some unconventional ideas to help supplement your college savings.

Found Money Jar

Have you ever found unexpected cash in your dryer or discovered coins hiding in your couch cushions? Instead of pocketing it, consider starting a “found money” jar. Whether it’s a few coins from the parking lot or a folded $20 from last winter’s coat, every little bit adds up. Get the kids involved—they’re great at spotting these treasures! You might be surprised at how much you collect by the end of the year.

Recycling

We’ve noticed that many neighbors in our community put out large bags of aluminum cans for recycling. Those willing to donate these bags to our children provide a great opportunity to earn a few bucks. After rinsing and crushing the cans, we can take them to the recycling center. You can also make it a learning experience—talk about the importance of cleaning up litter and leaving places better than you found them. During walks, don’t forget to bring a bag for other trash you find along the way!

Art Sale!

If you have a young artist in your home, consider showcasing their work! My 11-year-old creates some truly stunning pieces. Frame the artwork and list them for sale on platforms like Etsy, eBay, or Facebook Marketplace. Include a short biography about the artist and their motivation for selling their creations. This involvement can make children more appreciative of the importance of saving.

Paying for college does not have to be overwhelming if you start planning and saving early. Tuition costs are consistently rising—consider the impact of inflation over the next decade!
