Springtime Delight: DIY Chocolate Pretzel Birds Nest

My oldest daughter was visiting from college this past weekend, and we ended up snowed in (yay!). To make the most of our time, we decided to experiment in the kitchen together.

I recalled seeing these adorable chocolate bird nests online and thought it would be fun to try making them ourselves. Though I can’t pinpoint the original source as they’re quite popular, I developed my own method through some trial and error after only seeing the pictures. (If you have a different technique, feel free to share!)

Here’s what you’ll need:

• Pretzels (we opted for sticks, but regular ones will work too)
• Melting chocolate (we used Wilton, but chocolate chips work well too)
• Candy eggs (we used Reese’s Pieces Eggs)

Start by breaking a small amount of pretzels (enough for one nest) into pieces and placing them in a bowl. Drizzle a spoonful of melted chocolate over the pretzels, mixing to coat. Repeat this process until the pretzels are well-covered but avoid making them too soggy, as excessively wet pretzels will take longer to dry.

This is where your creativity shines! I started by forming a pile and gradually shaped it to create a “hole” in the center for three eggs. My daughter shaped hers into a triangle before working on the center. You’ll notice the chocolate begins to set as you mold it, so try not to overthink your design. Once you’ve made space, place the candy eggs in the middle, and voilà—you’re finished!

*Tip: If your nest becomes too dry before adding the eggs, they may not stay in place. You can drizzle a bit more chocolate into the center, or work quickly so that the chocolate on the pretzels sticks to the eggs.

Allow your nests to dry, and they will solidify into a shape you can easily move. Enjoy them as they are or use them as a delightful topping for cupcakes. The possibilities are endless based on your imagination!
