If you are planning a holiday in Scandinavia, I have some Stockholm hotels to consider in Sweden. From old Gamla Stan to Arlanda Airport hotels and central Stockholm, there’s a place for you in Sweden.

Let’s start with Hotel Gamla Stan. I’m a Best Western Rewards member. When I saw that the boutique Hotel Gamla Stan in Stockholm was a Best Western independently owned hotel, I made reservations. This was a wise move on my part. Summer was approaching and Stockholm, Sweden is a popular tourist destination. When I checked back, closer to our arrival date, the Stockholm hotel was completely booked.

Overlooking Lake Malaren, Stockholm is on the north-western edge of the Baltic Sea.  Hotel Gamla Stan is situated in the adorable Old Town of Stockholm. In fact, our historic hotel is an ideal place to stay. Not only for its central location, but it’s history, as well.

King bed with blue velvet headboard, white duvet, white pillows, yellow accent pillows , 2 white robes on bed. Blue and gold carpet. Burgundy velvet drapes on 2 bedroom windows on right side of room. Glass, tear drop chandelier in center of bedroom. Small, blue velvet chair to right of bed, by window. Floor stand fan by back window, right of bed.

The hotel itself is composed of three buildings, ranging from the 1600’s, to the 1700’s and 1800’s. Fortunately, the Best Western Signature Collection hotel included modern amenities such as two elevators. Unfortunately, during our stay, Hotel Gamla Stan was undergoing major renovations. The hotel’s website did mention renovations. It did not mention that all hotel windows facing Lake Malaren would be obstructed by scaffolding and plastic sheeting. When we opened our windows in the evening, the plastic flapped in the wind like canvas sails on a Viking ship. Like a ship at sea, we could not see land.

Hotel lobby with chandelier, two round, white marble table tops. Six blue velvet chairs surround two tables. Black and white checked marble tile on floor. Two picture windows framed by dark, velvet drapes.

No matter. We did enjoy our stay in Sweden and would return to Hotel Gamla Stan in Stockholm simply to experience the lake views. It was also conveniently located to Stockholm Central Station. Approximately a 20 minute, flat walk from T-Centralen, we carried backpacks and managed easily. It’s also an easy transfer by bus or train from Arlanda Sodra Station in the Arlanda International Airport in Sweden.

The small hotel lobby was a welcome site, as we were able to check our bags and explore Gamla Stan. We watched ferries criss cross the lake, bicyclists stream past the hotel and visited several museums before we were notified that our room was ready.

Room categories include singles, doubles, queen and king rooms. Our room was spacious and comfortable, located on the 3rd floor and accessible via elevator.

White cotton bathrobes and cotton slippers were waiting for us on our hotel bed. All rooms include electric kettle, desk and chair, and flat screen television. The walk-in shower was small, yet clean. The small bathrooms are typical in historic buildings. Although our Sure Stay hotel bathroom in Gothenburg was huge!

Hotel Gamla Stan breakfast

If you read more of my Sweden hotel reviews, you’ll see that I love these Best Western breakfasts. Not only are the meals included in the price of the hotel, the food quality is very high. I confess that I ate Swedish cheese and fresh pastries every day of our 3 week holiday. I also confess that I didn’t visit the hotel gym, although we did walk about 8 to 10 miles everyday during our Stockholm vacation.

Three-tiered platter of breakfast pastries. Top to bottom; mini croissants with powdered sugar on top, custard tartlet with powdered sugar on top, puff pastry with blackberry jam in center. A plate of honeydew melon is to left of pastry platter.

Room rates at Hotel Gamla Stan start at 700 SEK. During our visit, our king room rented for $201 per night. I suggest paying for your room in Swedish krona if the exchange rate is favorable during your visit. As mentioned, we are Best Western Rewards members and earned points during our 3-night stay. You may also reserve a room at the hotel, or your favorite hotel booking site like Booking.com (which often has better rates for European hotels).

As mentioned, Hotel Gamla Stan is located near the old town. Exit the front entrance and immediately turn a sharp right. This path will take you to the cobblestone streets of Gamla Stan Stockholm. Note the plaques with dates on the side of the residences, dating back to the 1600’s.

Arlanda Airport Hotel in Stockholm

Post pandemic travel has increased dramatically. Travel to Scandinavia is no exception. We found convenient comfort at Park Airport Hotel in Arlandastad, Sweden.

While I consider myself an adventurous traveler, I prefer to take the stress out of travel when it comes to the day of departure. With that in mind, I booked this Park Airport Hotel for the night before we departed Stockholm. Technically, this Best Western Plus hotel is located in Arlandastad, outside of Stockholm.

Best Western Plus Park Airport Hotel entrance. Three-story Airport Hotel comes together in a v-shape with a small, white metal portico entrance.

It made sense to stay at this Plus Park Airport Hotel because we are Best Western Reward members. The hotel in Arlandastad is less than 10 minutes from Stockholm Arlanda Airport and close to Märsta Train Station. The 4-star, 3-story hotel offered a complimentary airport shuttle – need I say more?

It should be noted that there is another Best Western hotel nearby. Don’t be alarmed if you attempt to check into this hotel and they don’t have your reservation. The clerk at the front desk said this happens frequently. We drove a little further and located our Park Airport Hotel. The hotel staff was friendly and professional upon check-in.

With 124 rooms, this convenient hotel was popular with flight crews. To me, that’s a good sign because they are used to accommodating late arrivals and early airport departures. They also offer long-term parking.

Hotel lobby with random plank hardwood floors. Four small, circular tables, with 3 brown leather chairs at each table, surround the tables. Glass picture windows open, to the right of the room. Four glass, dome, bell-shaped, white light fixtures hang from the ceiling, above each table. A black suede banquette sofa is on the back wall with 3 leather chairs facing the sofa. A hallway on the left, back of the room, leads to hotel rooms.

Hotel rooms for business or holiday travelers

Sure enough, our king double room was ready before the 3:00 p.m. check-in time. If the room had not been ready, we could have checked our luggage or waited in the comfortable lobby until our room was available.

With room selections of standard single, standard twin, family room and business room, there are choices for the solo traveler or family. Room descriptions may differ slightly, as we booked a king double. The family room said it accommodates a family of three, or three adults, with one adult on a spring bed. My guess is that a spring bed is equivalent to a sofa bed.

Our room included a bed, tiled bathroom with shower, 40-inch smart tv, workspace and safe. Additionally, there was an electric kettle in-room.

King double bed with 2 white pillows. White bedding and purple runner at the base of bed. A black bed skirt wraps around king mattress. Light oak wood plank flooring. Gray textured wall paper with gray modern, 4-section headboard. A small reading lamp bends out of each headboard on either side of the bed. Small, circular black end stool on both sides of bed. Beyond bed is purple chair by window.

Dining options at BW Plus Park Airport Hotel

There is a bar and restaurant at this hotel. We ate dinner at the restaurant and enjoyed the complimentary breakfast. I say this repeatedly about Best Western breakfast buffets; while I appreciate a complimentary BW breakfast, I wish our USA hotel breakfasts were as good as European hotels.

The Best Western breakfast buffets in Scandinavia are excellent. All Best Western hotels are independently owned and operated. While I realize that offering several types of fresh cheese, gourmet breads, meat, fresh fruit and hot dishes are expensive, I don’t know how American hotels get away with serving biscuits and gravy over pork patties and call that a breakfast buffet. Perhaps I’m being too critical? Our chain hotels often have waffle makers available, as well.

Hotel breakfast buffet with bowl of apples, tray of several individual glass bowls of yogurt with muesli and blueberries on top. A 3-tiered cookie tray is to the left, as well as a plate of croissants, covered in a plastic dome. Beyond is a counter with toaster, fresh bread, hardboiled eggs. Table beyond holds cheese, meats and mini croissants. To the left are tables with 2 black chairs on either side of tables. Three hotel guests are seated at two tables. A man checks his smart phone screen to the right of the buffet table.

We appreciated that the Park Airport Hotel offered a descent, but limited lunch and dinner menu. The hotel also featured a well stocked bar and a fairly wide selection of wines.

We didn’t venture off the hotel property, as we had an early morning departure. There was a gym on property for the exercise enthusiasts. Additionally, there was a walking trail nearby at the Sköndalsskogen Nature Reserve. The hotel offers a map of the area at the reception desk. Arlandastad Golf Club is also close to the airport hotel.

Airport hotel bar with beer glasses, wine glasses and champagne flute glasses hanging upside down from metal rack. More glasses are on the granite bar countertop. The back of a computer screen is centered below the glasses. Across from the counter is a wall with a shelf of alcohol bottles, and more glasses. To the right is a three-tiered glass shelf of more alcohol bottles.

Room rates start at $70 and higher, depending on time of year and room type. The hotel offers special packages with cheese and wine for an additional fee. If you’re not a BW rewards member, check Hotels.com or another online booking site to see if you can get a better rate.

Clarion Hotel Amaranten in central Stockholm is another good hotel option in Sweden. Like the Best Western Scandinavian hotels, Hotel Amaranten is more upscale than our Clarion Hotels in the United States. All of these hotels include complimentary breakfast. Read the complete review about this Swedish Clarion Hotel in Stockholm.

Finally, Haymarket by Scandic is another Stockholm hotel option. Close to Gamla Stan and a 5 minute walk to the train station, this retro-glam style hotel offers vintage charm in Stockholm. Any of these four Stockholm hotels to consider in Sweden will offer a good night sleep.
