The travel writers at Hotel Scoop review plenty of hotels in Ireland. From castles to bed and breakfast inns, there are many unique lodging properties along Ireland’s Wild Atlantic Way. If you enjoy the boutique hotel experience in a lovely setting, Strandhill Lodge and Suites in County Sligo may be right for you. This was my second trip to Ireland in two consecutive years, so I fall easily into the “love Ireland” camp. My husband and I have traveled the Wild Atlantic Way, but we never made it as far as Sligo. I’m very happy that we made it to this charming coastal town for a multi-day visit.
On our last visit to Ireland, we had stayed at Ice House Hotel & Spa in County Mayo. Two things that make a vacation successful for me is horseback riding and a trip to a day spa. The Chill Spa within Ice House and the hotel itself, used Voya Day Spa skincare products in their rooms. I fell in love with the products and made a note to myself to return to County Sligo where Voya skincare products were produced. Not only was I able to go horseback riding along the Wild Atlantic Way, I found Voya Day Spa and the charming Strandhill Lodge and Suites.
Opened in 2013, Strandhill Lodge is independently owned and operated. We were recommended to the hotel from Voya’s owner Neil Walton and it was a good choice. With only 22 rooms, the hotel fits right into the neighborhood and is easily walkable to the water, restaurants and, most important, Voya Day Spa. Insider Tip – the hotel offers special discounted rates to Voya Day Spa for guests of the hotel.
We stayed in a generously sized balcony room with a comfortable king bed. A sliding glass door and large picture windows look out to Standhill Bay and let in plenty of natural light. We were in luck with the weather for our walk around nearby Benbulben Mountain and horseback riding with Island View Riding Stables (thank you General Manager David for the horse riding recommendation.) I will confess that we did have one night where it just poured rain. If the weather turns foul during your visit know that the hotel features a residents lounge for guests to hang out, sip fancy espresso drinks from the Nespresso machine and browse a movie to take up to your room from the extensive DVD collection.
No matter the weather, there’s a bar and restaurant next door, frequented by the locals, and Shells Cafe is within walking distance for great breakfast and lunch options. Speaking of breakfast, Strandhill Lodge & Suites offers a really good buffet breakfast included with the price of your hotel room. With coffee, juice, meats, cheeses, boiled eggs, pastries, yogurts & plenty of cereal choices there really is something for everyone.
Rates start at $95 (you’ll be paying Euro in Ireland) with complimentary breakfast included. The hotel offers a best rate guarantee for booking direct and rates include complimentary wifi and free parking. Travel cots (as they are called in Ireland) also known as portable cribs, are available for children at no additional cost. Rooms include mini fridge, tv/dvd player, in-room safe, Nespresso machine and tea kettle. Make your reservation online at the hotel website or an OTA like Expedia or Hotels.com.
